They are successfully cultivated upon a great variety of soils, one kind not being adiipted to all varieties, although some kinds succeed well in almost any land; however, should never be planted in a very dry or very wet situation. A good sandy loam with a clay subsoil seems best suited to most varieties. Many of the latest and best flavored sorts thrive best on heavy clay soil, while those grown upon sandy soil ripen their fruit early, extending the fruiting season from one to two weeks, by plant- ing both early and late varieties upon early and late soil. Soil, locality and climate make more differ- «nce with the strawberry than most other kinds of small fruits. The only certain method of success is for each one to try several varieties of early, me- <3ium and late sorts, and cultivate those that give the best results. Manure. Well rotted stable manure applied broadcast, two or three inches thick on the surface, thoroughly mixing the soil with harrow, rake or digginn fork, is the most beneticial. When these cannctbe had, guano, bone, super phosphate and ashes can be used with best results, applying broad- cast, mixing well with the soil with rake or har- row. Cultivation.
