Last Tuesday, thefinest day that ever was, we went to the Dyke, which is, in fact,the remains of a Roman encampment, overlooking one of thegrandest natural landscapes in the world, and consequently ascene the most unfit for a picture. It is the business of a painternot to contend with nature, and put such a scene, a valley filledwith imagery fifty miles long, on a canvas of a few inches; butto make something out of nothing, in attempting which he mustalmost of necessity become poetical—but you understand all thisbetter than I.
