. Under the turquoise sky of Colorado .. . In passing, however, it may not be amiss to briefly answer aquery or two which will naturally arise in the mind of thetourist. To one whose conception of Colorado is that of mightypeaks and yawning canons only, the fact that it has an area undera high degree of cultivation but a trifle less in size than that ofthe entire state of Connecticut will prove something of a surprise. When one realizes that Colorado has twenty-five thousandsquare miles of coal fields, and that considerably over fortymillions of dollars in gold, silver, lead and copper are yieldedannually by Colorados mines, it is amazing to learn that thevalue of the farm products very materially exceeds the result ofher mineral activity. There are in Colorado approximately three million acresnow under cultivation and increasing in productive valueeach year. There is ample water for irrigating purposes, and above twomillion acres are brought into astonishing productiveness inthis way. Colorado is a state of happy surprises. 5. A Bit of Colorado Country Who can forget the luscious Rocky Ford melons, thedelicious peaches, plums, apples and pears and the Greeleypotato ? Here they attain such perfection as is seldom found, and in bounteous quantity. Nearly a half million dollars worth of potatoes have beenshipped from Greeley alone in a single season. Thousands of acres are devoted to peas, which are distributedthroughout the civilized world. These products play a conspicuous part in Colorados agri-cultural wealth, but are not alone. Tomatoes, celery andasparagus thrive and produce wonderfully. Wheat, oats, barley and alfalfa seem to outdo themselves ingenerous yields. The introduction of the sugar beet marked an epoch inColorados agricultural history and proved the beginning of aprofitable industry. Conditions are particularly favorable to itssuccessful cultivation, and the soil possesses elements which givesthe product an unusually high percentage of saccharine matter
