Schoolcraft, wasemployed in 1846, to take a census ofthe Indians in the state ; and he collect-ed a mass of the most valuable facts ev-er obtained, relating to any family ofthe human race, the chan-ges occurring in the transition state,from the savage toward tlie civilizedcondition.
