. Annual report of the Bureau of American Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution . chuens in an ahau, isapparent. Let us trythe count with the dayand chuen numbers re-versed—that is, on thesupposition that the se-ries should read 8— equals 2,979 days, which number countedbackward from 13 Ahati 18 Cumhu brings us to 11 Imix 19 Muan, which apparently justifies the change and proves the date 11 Imix19 Muan to be correct. Turning to Goodmans Archaic Chronological Calendar, to the 9thcycle of his 54th great cycle, in which the series of this inscriptionare located, we find that 13 Ahau 18 Cumhu is the first day of the 17thkatun according to his method of numbering. However, it must beremembered that he begins the count of katuns with 20, followingwith 1, 2, etc., up to 19; therefore 13 Ahau 18 Cumhu is really thefirst daj of the 18th katun, 17 entire katuns having lieen passed overfrom the initial date of the inscription (8 Ahau 13 Ceh, the first day ofthe 9th cycle). This verifies our eoneltision as to the signification ofthe symbol for 17 katuns in glyph Fig. 155. Part of inscription on the west side of Stela E,Quirigua. Maudslay, part 12. plate xxxi. SECOKDARY SERIES OF QUIRIGUA INSCRIPTIONS 231 For the purpose of determining the tliird minor series given in theinscription as 1-1-18-15, followed by 11 Imix 19 Muan, we will countfrom the initial date of the inscription, placing side bj- side the seriesas given in the inscription and as corrected.
