This image was taken on the handover day for Phase I of the hospital redevelopment project. It was published in the Jan-Feb 1983 issue of Laing's monthly newsletter, Team Spirit. Laing’s Southern Region was awarded the contract for the first phase of a multi-million pound redevelopment project at Mayday Hospital. The contract was awarded by the South West Thames Regional Health Authority and was to be carried out over a period of three years, with work starting in 1979. The contract included a new three storey surgical block with a linked service block, which was to be connected to the main hospital complex by bridge. The Laing contract also included the provision of a new road between the site and London Road, car parks, and other ancillary buildings.
