Konpon Daito Temple Stupa in the Grounds of Dai Garan and Kongobu-ji Temple Complex.

Kobo Daishi and his successor Shinzen Daitoku devoted themselves to the construction of this pagoda, which took from 816 through 887. Kobo Daishi referred to this pagoda as a representation of the universe, and, as it played a role as the central training dojo for the Shingon Sect, it was called the Konpon (principal) Daito. This is believed to be Japan’s first square two-storied pagoda. The building was destroyed by fire from lighting strikes five times in it's history and rebuilt each time. The present building was erected in 1934 after the great fire 1843 destroyed many Garan buildings. The building was last renovated in 1996. It is 50 meters high and 30 meters square, built to original 9th century designs by Kobo Daishi.
