Recently put into production at West-ern Electrics Indianapolis works are thenewly-designed Hospital Set, the AutomaticReporting Telephone (ART) and the Call-a-MaticCKj automatic dialing telephone. The Hospital Set, which has a Trimline®dial-in-handset phone and a base that re-sembles a transistor radio, will become partof a new communications system for hospi-tals, offering patients a convenient methodof communication inside and outside thehospital. Instead of the usual buzzer systemfor paging nurses, the Hospital Set enablesthe patient, hands-free, not only to signalthe nurse but also to speak with her. Withthe set, the patient no longer has to waituntil the nurse sees his signal and walksto the room. The patients set also provides 57. Patients can have hands-free communicationto nurses station with new Hospital Set. telephone service to outside phones throughthe hospital switchboard. At the nursess sta-tion, a small console provides terminationsfor lines to the patients Instrument andto the hospital PBX. The Automatic Reporting Telephone is de-signed for use at unattended industrial lo-cations to warn of abnormal or dangerousconditions, such as power failures or chang-ing pressures in tanks filled with explosivegas. When the phone is triggered, it ringsa preset local or long distance number. Ifno one answers within one minute, the ARTwill disconnect and then try again In 30 sec-onds. It will keep trying for a total of ninetimes In a 20-mlnute period. When someonedoes answer, a pre-recorded warning mes-sage is played. The Call-a-Matic telephone combines Touch-Tone® dialing with an automatic telephonedirectory storing up to 500 frequently callednumbers. The numbers are recorded on mag-net
