If for any reason the mothersmilk cannot be used and a suitable wet-nurse cannot be obtained, the childsnourishment should consist of cows milk, properly sterilized and diluted andotherwise modified to suit the age and condition of the infant. The greatestcare should be observed in the preparation of the nourishment, whether it betaken from the breast or be prepared from cows milk, and in its administra-tion, so that the child will receive it free from germs. Milk may be givenfrom the beginning, or the child may receive during the first day from 10 to20 minims of warm water, containing 2 minims of whisky, every one or twohours. From 1 to 2 d
