A hiker approaching Santa Maria della Pietà next to the 10th Century Rocca Calascio, a mountaintop fortress near the hilltown of Santo Stefano di Sessanio n the Province of L'Aquila in Abruzzo, Italy. At a height of 1,460 metres (4,790 ft), the octagonal church was built in the seventeenth century. According to legend, it was built by the local people to thank the Madonna for saving them from the attack of a group of bandits.
