The low level of the balloonis also shown by the way in which the peaks in the backgroundstand out against the horizon. The irregularities in the direc-tion of the roads, and in the appearance of the ploughed land, alltend to show that the country is hilly. In the parts round a andb there are many gentle curves which fall gradually into thevalleys or more evel ground lying among the hills. These peculiarities can be traced onthe photograph of Kudersdorf, and in many of the others. Theview of the chalk-pits near Kudersdorf is particularly interest-ing ; at a first glance the uneven nature of the ground is notvery striking. The heights of the various points are shown inmetres, and the incline of 1 in 4 in the foreground looks almost
