The retail florists here report trade as good for the season. H. E. Juenemann, in charge of the government bulb propagating garden, located near this city, left May 16 for Washington, D. C, whence he will pro- ceed on an extensive trip to Europe. Henry Klopfer arrived recently from Chico, Cal., and will look after the work during Mr. Juenemann's absence. Thou- sands of visitors from this city and other points on the Sound have been attracted to the garden during the last six weeks, to see the beautiful effects produced by the thousands of hyacinths, narcissi and tulips, in full bloom. On my last visit there, I found, to my great sorrow, that the last of the late and Darwin tulips had been plucked off and duly disposed of in a hole, said to be eighty feet deep, by Uncle Sam's faith- ful servants. The weather has been summer-like for some time, and flower lovers have been busy with spade, rake and hose in every direction. R. A. T. VISITOBS AT SAN MATEO. Probably the best known commercial horticultural establishment in the vicin- ity of San Francisco, even though it is but a few years old, is that of the Mac- Rorie-McLaren Co., at San Mateo. Dan MacRorie first visited the coast as a traveler for an eastern concern. He had the gift of seeing into the future and recognized that the horticultural trade on the coast, and particularly in the vicinity of San Francisco, was far behind the population and bound to have a big growth within a few years.
