MYCOBACTERIUM TUBERCULOSIS

Here Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a sputum smear is stained using the Ziehl-Neelsen technique; Magnified 1000x. Ziehl-Neelsen technique is used for staining acid-fast bacteria using a carbol-fuchsin solution, decolorizing in acid alcohol, and counterstaining with methylene blue. Mycobacteria, have waxy coated cell walls which prevents Gram staining.
