These are the porches that after the tenthcentury became so frequent in the churches of Kome, andthose of the Lombard, stylein the eastern half ofUpper Italy. If, however, this porch was, as I believe, the work of Oriental artists, one must admit that thoseartists already possessed itstype in their own country;and in fact in the exterior ofthe church of Roueiha inSyria (sixth century), fourporches exist that only differfrom ours in being supportedby four columns instead ofpilasters, and in not possess-ing projecting brackets. Simi-lar porches also protect thefour lateral doors of a churchof the sixth century atBaquoza.
