Common Frogs ( Rana temporaria) - UK - males attempting to mate with bottle - The common frog is one of the most widespread amphibians in Northern Europe occurring in Britain - Spain and Western Europe to Scandanavia - Russia and Central Europe - Inhabitant of dry land returning to the water to escape predation and breed - In early spring large numbers of common frogs congregate in shallow pools to breed - lay large communal masses of eggs - large egg masses are thought to protect the eggs from cold weather - In warm ponds tadpoles reach maturity in 6 weeks - metamorphosis may take as long as 4 months in cold water - Males call the females with a deep croak - During mating males hold females tightly with their forelegs (amplexus) - During the breeding season males may attempt to clasp on to various objects including bottles as seen in the photo here
