Badaling a strategic pass through a gorge in the Jundu Mountains, is the easiest major section of Great Wall to get to from Beijing, and the busiest by far. Following Mao's proclamation that 'he who has not climbed the Great Wall is not a true man', the crumbling battlements at Badaling were rebuilt – the first section to be restored – and it opened to the masses in 1957.
