A late 19th century view of the River Suir flowing under the timber and iron bridge later replaced by the Rice Bridge in the early 1980s. Waterford City in the south-east of Ireland is the oldest city in the Republic of Ireland. Waterford Port was a major port for over a millennium and during the 19th century,the location for the Neptune Shipyard, when the Malcomson family, built and operated the largest fleet of iron steamers in the world between the mid-1850s and the late 1860s.
