Basilica Virgen de la Peña (Basilica of Our Lady of the Rock), built in the 1500s above the village of Graus, in Ribagorça or Ribagorza county, Huesca province, Aragon, Spain.
Graus, Ribagorça or Ribagorza county, Huesca province, Aragon, Spain: the Basilica Virgen de la Peña, Basilica Santa Maria de la Peña or Basilica Nuestra Señora de la Peña (Basilica of Our Lady of the Rock). The Basilica was built in the 16th century, on the site of an earlier building of Romanesque origin, and dated 1543 by the master builders. Construction was financed by the nearby monastery of San Juan de la Peña, on which the Basilica depended until the end of the 16th century, when it was linked to the bishopric of Barbastro. Graus is a village in the Spanish Pyrenees in one of the areas where the Aragonese language is still spoken. It is the administrative capital of Ribagorza county. In 1063, El Cid took part in the Battle of Graus at which the King of Aragon was killed.
