The first flowering period being past and a new growth coming on, houses are held for better trade conditions, and the buds are pinched off to get longer stems with the next growth, which should at maturity find a better market. American Beau- ties are not so plentiful and clean up well with little stock going to waste. All the newer roses appear to find admirers. The Taft. Lady Hillingdon, Mrs. Ward and the latest entry, Sunrise, will give Kil- larney a run the coming season and add much needed variety in the rose section. Cattleyas are now to be had by the 1,000 it required. They are of superb quality. Prices are less than one-half of the figures of three weeks ago. Gardenias are much too plentitui. The street men are seen daily on Chest- nut street carrying boxes of very good flowers which are offered at extremely low figures. Surely some one is blundering; forcing this flower on a dull market at the opening of the sea- son is no way to build up a trade at good prices for this exclusive flower later on. Easter lilies and valley are about normal in supply. The early weddings are keeping the valley crop moving. Some very good carnations have been seen, but they will not be much of a factor until Jack Frost disposes of their outdoor rivals. The flahlia now dominates the market. Quantities of choice flowers are sent in on orders, and as this is all se- lected stock the grade of these flowers is gradually being raised. The bar- gain lots of inferior stoc
