Medieval Rothern Bridge and River Torridge at Low Summer Water with Pebbles, Torrington, Devon.

Rothern bridge, was built in the 1400s and used to carry the main road from Bideford and Monkleigh in to Torrington crossing the River Torridge. This medieval bridge was refaced in the early nineteenth century and replaced by the more modern Rolle Bridge which was built in 1928. The river Torridge which flows beneath it starts its life on Woolley Moors between Bradworthy and Morwenstow. After completing a long loop it meets the Taw at Appledore then flows out into the Bristol Channel. It is famous for its setting in ‘Tarka the Otter’ by Henry Williamson and more lately in ‘Flow’ a novel for young adults by John Insull. The Tarka trail can be joined here by the old Torrington Railway Station.
