Charles William Siemens (1823-1883), German-British engineer. Born in Germany as Carl Wilhelm Siemens, he came to England in 1843 where he settled and became a naturalized citizen in 1859. He developed a regenerative furnace that recovered heat from exhaust gases. He also worked with electric telegraphs, designing the ship that laid the first trans-Atlantic cable in 1874. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1862, Siemens was President of the Institution of Electrical Engineers in 1872 and 1878. He was knighted in 1883.
