Schmorl nodules, MRI scan


Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the lumbar spine of a 49-year-old patient with Schmorl nodules forming at the L2 and L3 levels, with peripheral oedema. Also known as intravertebral disc herniations, Schmorl's nodules are protusions of the gelatinous core of the intervertebral disc that penetrate the trabecular bone (spongy bone) of the vertebral bodies. Most Schmorl's nodules are painless but some can lead to lower back pain. Treatment for painful Schmorl's nodules include rest and taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). Osteophytes (bony growths) have also formed.
