A 19th Century illustration of the Edison-Hopkinson dynamo. As earlier types of Edison dynamo became obsolete improved designs came along and one Dr John Hopkinson improved performance by altering the field-magnets and modifying the armature of the machine, getting more iron into it, thus diminishing the magnetic reluctance in this part of the magnetic circuit.
