Meyers was born in Prussia, on the 22d ofJune, 1842, a son of Mathias and Elizabeth INIeyers, both of whom werenatives of Germany, where tliey resided until 1858, when they crossed theAtlantic and established their home upon a farm in Hanover township, Lakecounty, Indiana, the father there carrying on agricultural pursuits for anumber of years. In the public schools of Germany Stephen IMeyers acquired his educa-tion and when sixteen years of age he accompanied his parents to the newworld.
