Germany: 'The Merchant Georg Gisze'. Oil on wood painting by Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543), c. 1532. Hans Holbein the Younger was a German-Swiss painter and printmaker of the Northern Renaissance Style, seen by many as one of the greatest portraitists of the 16th century. His range of work also included Reformation propaganda, religious art and satire, and he was an influential contributor to the history of book design. He was also King's Painter to Henry VIII of England, his portraits of the royal family and the nobility an important surviving record of the English court.
