Portrait photo circa 1850s of Martin Van Buren. Van Buren (1782 - 1862) was the eighth US President and held office from 1837 to 1841. A former Vice-President (1833 - 1837) and Secretary of State, he was the first President who was not of British descent (his ancestry was Dutch) and the first President to be born an American citizen as his predecessors were born British subjects prior to the American Revolution.
