MTN Public Phone Shop no name in Lesedi Volus Township run by Jane Chabatsane age 56 The business was started around 4 years ago by Jane s husband Robert Sibanda although originally someone else ran it Robert had bought the shop after being made redundant in 2000 from an electrical store Out of work for about a year his severance pay of R150 000 was enough to purchase the business R32 000 Jane had a relatively low level of education and training and used to sell cold drinks sweets and ice cream Sadly Robert passed away in 2005 from a stroke aged 44 Jane found it very difficult as she also had to keep the business going after he died as she had lots of other expenses so she appointed her son in law to help run the shop She now comes in for one hour a day Jane told me if she lost the shop there is nothing I can live with it s finished with me and she relies on the income totally Customers use the shop for both business and personal calls The shop buy the airtime in advance from MTN with R1000 lasting 2 days bringing in between R3000 and R4500 profit per week GSM Association recently sponsored 2 computers to be used over MTN s mobile data network Jane says Every day people ask about the internet they are in a hurry to see it working School children ask about it Children like it to play the games Mandlenkosi Sithole a tailor 3 doors up from the phone shop uses Jane s shop to make calls despite having his own mobile phone on pre pay It only costs 90c per minute which is cheaper than his own phone People talk a lot about the computers but not many people know how they work Young people have access to training The older generation will be too lazy to go to training It would be very prestigious to have my own email address people will like this People can do job hunting it makes it quite easier And it is time saving People will soon no longer need to take the R14 bus trip for internet service
