On one East Java estate, where tapping had been in pro-gress for nearly a year, the sheets of rubber were of such un-common strength as to cause general remark. The cause ofthis apparent anomaly, since the rubber was produced fromvery young trees, was found on investigation to be that the .150 THE RUBBER TREE BOOK tapping was of the lightest possible description at the yields of latex were extremely meagre, but, as stated, therubber was of very unusual strength. Tapping on young trees of 24 inches girth and under 3 feetfrom the ground should never be done higher than 3 to 4 feetfrom the ground. High tapping is bad tapping, everywhere and all thetime.
