Leonardo's sketch of explosive cannon balls fired from large mortars. The cannon balls consisted of round shells fitted around iron spacers and stitched inside a pliable casing. After firing the projectiles exploded with large quantities of dust and smoke and burst into fragments. Cannon had generally been used in sieges. Leonardo aimed to design a weapon for use against small moving targets like troops.
