Car with Oil-Engine Drive forSan Diego The San Diego & Southeastern Railway has recentlyplaced in service a light-weight motor car designed andbuilt by the Hewitt-Ludlow Auto Company of SanFrancisco, Cal., for use on the 18-mile run between thecities of San Diego and Santee, Cal. The car weighs20,400 lb., is 25-ft. long and seats thirty-two equipment includes a 70-hp. oil engine that drivesboth pairs of rear truck wheels by means of worm for four speeds is provided, including reverse,. NEW 10-TON MOTOR CAR FOR SAN DIEGO the maximum speed being 40 The car has twofour-wheeled swiveling trucks, the wheels at the frontbeing 24 in. in diameter while those on the rear truckare 36 in. in diameter. Westinghouse air-brake equip-ment is used. Since Feb. 23 the car has been in serviceon a regular schedule, and it has met with the unquali-fied approval of the officials of the railway as well as thecompanys patrons who have ridden in it. The car takes the long grades which obtain upon theinterurban route that it serves, and which range fromthree-fourths of 1 per cent to 2]/2 per cent, at 25 the third gear connection and it holds the rails verywell, the operators finding it unnecessary to slackenspeed through any of the curves on the main line. Inthe business district of San Diego the car goes aroundcurves of 55-ft. radius and over all kinds of specialtrack work with perfect ease. B. M.
