War of Independence of the United States of America. British General Cornwallis (1738-1805) surrender after Battle of Yorktown, Virginia, on October 19, 1781. American army defeated the British. General Cornwallis surrendered his troops. Pleading illness, Cornwallis did not attend the surrender ceremony, but his second-in-command, General Charles O’Hara, carried Cornwallis’ sword to the American and French commanders.
