Intervertebral bone graft, X-ray. Sagittal (side) view of a bone graft between the lumbar and sacral vertebrae (lower back bones) of a 34 year old patient. The graft is between the 5th lumbar and 1st sacral vertebrae (L5 and S1) where the intervertebral disc has worn away. Intervertebral discs are flat, circular structures that contain cartilage and line the joints between the vertebrae. They act as shock absorbers and cushion the spine during movement.
