Project Mercury monument. Monument to the astronauts of the Project Mercury program. Project Mercury was the first human spaceflight program of the United States. It ran from 1959-1963 with the goal of putting a human in orbit around the Earth. The number 7 represents the seven original astronauts; the rest of the design is the astronomical symbol of the Planet Mercury.
