Cabrillo National Monument on the southern tip of the Point Loma peninsula with San Diego harbor and the city skyline in the distance. The site commemorates the first European arrival at San Diego. The 16th-century the Portuguese explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo landed at this spot on September 15, 1542. He explored of the west coast of North America on behalf of Spain. A statue of Cabrillo is located on the headland overlooking over the bay.
