The foundation should be on firm ground, with all sod and per-ishable matter removed over the entire area of the foundationfor a depth of at least 6 inches, to prevent disintegration andpossible leakage. When the height exceeds 10 ft., an intercepting or bond trench2 ft. deep, from 6 to 12 ft. wide, should be made running the fulllength. The inner slope should be protected with a thick layer of hardmaterial, and when subject to wave action a further layer ofhea\y rock should Vje provided; the rear slope is best protectedby sod. The waste way if possible should be located at a natural gap. 470 CRIB AND MASONRY DA
