Gladiator Tesserae

Gladiator tesserae were four-sided pieces of bone with a hole bored at one end through which a string could be passed. They all bear the name of the gladiator and his master or trainer followed by the letters S P, the day of the month, and the names of the consuls for the year. In this illustration of excavated tesserae fragments, the one on the left reads: Antiochus, slave of Scribonius, approved July 15 in the consulship of Cn. Cornelius and L. Marcius. This would be 56 The one on the right reads: Philodamus, slave of Gellius, approved in the consulship of Cn. Pompeius and M. Crassus This would be 70 or 66
