Smash EDO Carnival Against the Arms Trade protest in Brighton - the march starts
Campaigners against the war in Iraq have mounted a long campaign against the Brighton factory of arms manufacturer EDO MBM, with regular demonstrations outside its site. The local police have made many arrests and are often accused of failing to allow peaceful protest, as well as at times of provoking violence. Many of the cases against protesters have been thrown out of courts. They attempted to stop what had until this point been a peaceful and well-ordered march several hundred yards from the factory. Demonstrators then pushed past police, to be stopped just outside, where there were a number of attacks and I was almost pushed down a cliff. It looked as if a stalemate had been reached and nothing much further was going to happen. Then unaccountably one of the main gates to the site was left unlocked and unguarded. The protesters surged in and were set on fairly brutally by police according to accounts from colleagues still there, some of whom sustained minor injuries. There was some minor damage to the factory.
