Computed tomography (CT) scan in progress, showing the scanner and patient in the background and the radiographer working at the scanner's computer terminal in the foreground. An image of the subject's abdomen appears on the screen, constructed from data relating to the attenuation of a series of X-ray beams by body tissues, passed through the subject from numerous points around the circular scanner. CT scans display good contrast between soft tissues in the body, differentiating between bone, fat and muscle due to the varying X-ray absorption character- istics of these tissues. The photograph was taken at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle.
