Sex hormone-binding globulin. Molecular model showing two molecules of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG, ball and sticks) embedded in a sex hormone
Sex hormone-binding globulin. Molecular model showing two molecules of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG, ball and sticks) embedded in a sex hormone (pink and turquoise). SHBG is a glycoprotein that binds to sex hormones, specifically testosterone and oestradiol. SHBG is produced by liver cells, the brain, uterus, placenta and vagina. It is released into the bloodstream where it binds to the hormones, inhibiting their uptake by cells. SHBG levels therefore influence the bio-availability of these sex hormones and ultimately their effect on the body.
