Panel with memorial sign to wall victims at Bernauerstrasse and information about 'Heinz Cyrus, Berlin Wall, Gartenstrasse
This German-English information panel, at the Berlin Wall Memorial, reads: 'Heinz Cyrus, who was just about to turn thirty, had already had a number of run-ins with the GDR state authority and had been imprisoned for political offences. Threatened once again with prison, he decided to flee on November 10, 1965. Cyrus tried to cross the Wall near Gartenstrasse. He was discovered by a watchdog and came under fire from three sides. Uninjured, he fled into the buildiing at Gartenstrasse 85. The border soldiers pursued him and searched the building. Cyrus climbed out of a window on the fourth floor, apparently planning to lower himself from there, but he lost his balance and fell into the courtyard. He died of his injuries the next day. Although people in the West heard the shots and watched as he was carried away, no-one knew for sure whether the man thay saw had died. This is why the death of Heinz Cyrus was not commemorated with an individual monument until 1989.' Illustrated above the information about Hans Cyrus is a 'Memorial Sign for the Victims of the Wall at Bernauer Strasse'. The reverse of the panel reads: 'Heinz Cyrus 5 Juni 1936 11 November 1965'.
