The archaeological ruins of El Fuerte of Samaipata, Bolivia, Latin America


The archaeological complex known as El Fuerte is 9 kilometres from the town of Samaipata. It is situated off the old mountain road from Santa Cruz to Cochabamba . At the centre of the complex is a huge sandstone rock which has a variety of carvings dated back to 1000BC. The Incas also used the site and there are over 50 Incan buildings on the site. The name El Fuerte meaning the fort was given by the Spanish Conquistadors, the original indigenous name is unknown.
