N.,23, and Eliza Freelon (Halsey) Colvocoresses, was born in Norwich,Vt., April 3, 1847. He was a cadet at the University, class of 18GG, but left that institutionat the close of his freshman year and served in the United States Navy onboard the United States Ships, Supply and Saratoga during th(; Civil War forover two years. Subsequently he entered the United States Naval Academy,and was graduated in 1869. In passing through the suc-cessive grades of the Navy, his seaservice of more than twenty-twoyears extended to every quarter ofthe world and comprised all theduties of a sea officer afloat.
