French Revolution. Tennis Court Oath (20 June 1789). Solemn pledge of union with the aim of putting an end to the Ancien régime. It took place in a tennis court (Jeu de Paume) at Versailles by 578 French deputies. Convened there as part of the Estates General of 1789, they were overwhelmingly members of the Third Estate, with some representatives of the clergy and nobility. Engraving.
