Even though Matsumoto would not definitelycommit himself to synonymizing the species without having seen the Mada-gascar species in their stratigraphic context, it is gratifying to see that theendemic gap between the North American and Madagascar species can benarrowed. The South African material is as variable as S. chicoense^ and is herereferred to the two existing species S. woodsi and S. condamyi. As will be seenin the systematic descriptions below, ornament and suture are extremelyvariable. Specimens with smooth inner whorls occur at the same stratigraphiclevel as heavily ornamented ones, and are connected by transitions. In the SouthAfrican material, ornament is partially associated with geographic location, suggesting that ornament alone is of very little systematic value in the classi-fication of Submortonicer
