It contains the Rural Home School forboys, and a manufactory of cotton and woolengoods. In the township is the hamlet of NorthPownal. Population of township 1900, 1,976. POWNALL, Thomas, a Massachusetts colonialgovernor; born in Lincoln, England, in 1720. In753 he accompanied Sir Danvers Osborn, govern-or of New York, as private secretary; in 1755-56was lieutenant-governor of New Jersey; and in1756-58 governor of Massachusetts. He returnedto England in 1760, and became a member ofParliament. He was an opponent of the Stamp. EDWARD J. POYNTER. Act, and favored an early peace with the Americancolonies. He retired from public life in published a number of works which werewidely read on account of the intimate knowledgeof their author of his subject. Among them areThe Administration of the Colonies (1764); Descrip-tion of the Middle States of America (1776); andState of Affairs Between the Old and New World(1780). He died in Bath, Feb. 26, 1805. POYNTER, Edward John, a British artist; bornin Paris, March 20, 1836; the son of Ambrose Poyn-ter, the architect, andgreat-grandson of ThomasBanks, , sculptor. Hereceived his education atWestminster school,Brigh-ton College, and Ipswichgrammar-school; and stud-ied art in the Englishschools.
