Hence the material require-ment was not wanting for architecture, and templesbegan to rear their sculptured beauty on every hand. Under the Ptolemaic rule temples differed quitematerially from the palaces of worship of the Thebankings. The plans show much greater irregularity as atPhilae (Fig. 13), but also less originality, and cover asmaller area of surface.
