A cochlea implant has an external microphone component (behind the ear, black) to detect sounds from the environment, which then travel to a transmitter (grey) connected to a receiver (not seen) in the scalp. The receiver converts the sounds to electrical impulses, which then travel along electrodes running from the receiver to deep within the cochlea. These make contact with the auditory nerve and allow the impulses to reach the brain.
