Breast cancer adhesions. Fluorescence light micrograph of focal adhesions in breast cancer cells. Some breast cancers over-express an inhibitory type of enzyme called Nek3 (red), which plays a role in how a cell organizes itself and moves. Here, this over-expression has led to marked enlargement of focal adhesions and associated proteins such as paxillin (pink). These help the cell's cytoskeleton (actin, green) connect to surrounding tissues. The DNA in cell nuclei appears blue here. Research into cancer treatments include targeted therapy against the Nek3 enzyme.
