Although so nearthat the arc-lamps on the docks of the city can dis-tinctly be seen from there at night, one is apparentlyhundreds of miles away. Until a couple of monthsago the Amazon Steam-Navigation Company hadtheir repair-shops on the north-eastern shore ofthis island, but this is now gone, and there remainsof the establishment nothing but a few houses, orhuts, along the water, where the people lead thesame monotonous lives as in the interior. Thereare a few rubber estates on the island but all seemto be half-abandoned. The land lies very lowand to a great extent is constantly forest covers every square foot of it and evenreaches far out into the actual river, leaving nodistinct shore-line. Numerous ygarapes intersectthe island, running dry at low tide and filling up at 64. Rubber-worker in the act of gashing the tree(Photographed for the Brazilian Rubber Exposition)
