British portraitist Emil Otto Hoppe

In his day, Emil Otto Hoppe was one of the most influential and highly regarded photographers in the world. A German immigrant to Britain in the early 1900's, Hoppe went on to become the leading practitioner of photographic portraits in England and the world. Hoppe's friendship with George Bernard Shaw reinforced his interest in the working class, and on the streets of London he found beauty in faces that revealed hard work and engagement in life. According to him, beauty resided in the intellectual and inner qualities of each subject. This exhibition features 142 photographs including many remarkable vintage prints rarely seen before. It was organized by the National Portrait Gallery in London with the collaboration of Curatorial Assistance in Pasadena, California.
